Adjusting and Tweaking Xfer Serum Presets
Xfer Serum is a powerful wavetable synthesizer that offers a wide range of sound design possibilities. Here are some tips and techniques to adjust and tweak Serum presets effectively:
Selecting and Loading Presets
Serum contains a variety of fantastic presets, some even with samples from famous artists. Presets can be chosen from the black window at the top. By clicking the “< >” button, you can try out different sounds.
If you want to change the preset folder location, you can do so by opening the menu in Serum and choosing "Show Serum Presets folder". After that, create a new Serum instance, it's going to say it can't find the presets, and ask you to please tell it where it is. Point it to the new location, and you're done.
Modifying Presets
Once you've selected a preset, you can start modifying it to suit your needs. Serum has 2 main oscillators, with a sub and noise oscillator. You can turn these on/off by clicking the blue button on the side of the name, or use the “LEVEL” knob to adjust the balance. You can also change the underlying wavetables of a preset to create new variations.
Using the Mod Matrix
The Mod Matrix in Serum allows you to assign various modulators (like LFOs, envelopes, and velocity) to different parameters within the synth. This can be used to create dynamic, evolving sounds.
Using the Noise Oscillator
The Noise Oscillator in Serum can be used to add texture and character to your sounds. You can load any audio file into the Noise Oscillator and use it as a layer in your sound design. This noise oscillator is the secret recipe for techno producers and any producer looking to create a unique and full sound.
Using Effects
Serum also comes with a variety of built-in effects that can be used to further shape your sound. These include distortion, reverb, delay, and more. You can apply these effects to your entire patch or individual patches and oscillators.
Advanced Techniques
For more advanced sound design, you can use Serum's LFO editor to draw custom waveforms and use them as oscillators. You can also use Serum's reverb filter to add powerful resonance, body, and weight to any synth patch.
Remember, the key to mastering Serum is to experiment and explore its features. By understanding how each parameter affects the sound, you can start to create your own unique presets from scratch.
